Lesson #4: SANITY
“We were really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we would never live through it. We felt we were doomed to die and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God.” 2 Corinthians 1: 8-9 [TLB]
Insanity has been defined as “doing the same thing over an over again, expecting a different result each time.” Sanity has been defined as “wholeness of mind; making decisions based on the truth.” Jesus is the only Higher Power who offers us this truth and the power necessary to confront our hurts, habits, and hang-ups and choose the path of recovery.
When we accept Jesus, we receive strength to face the fears that, in the past, have caused us to fight, flee, or freeze. Relying on our own power and strength is what got us to this point in the first place, so it would be insanity to continue on the same path, expecting a different outcome, right?
The Lord is faithful, and when we accept and acknowledge Him as our Savior, we are guaranteed His protection and His presence with us in times of trial. Looking forward to this week as we learn ways to stop the insanity of our past behaviors and thought processes and allow the Lord to restore us to sanity as only He can!
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.” Psalm 46:1
Recovery Reminder
Principle 2: Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.
“Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
Step 2: We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
